Our Summer Reading Program is designed to improve test scores and reduce reading deficiencies of elementary school students. Our program provides structured reading and enrichment activities for first through fifth grade students to intercept the decline in national and state reading scores.
For eight weeks, with no more than 12 students in each class, participants are paired with State Certified Reading Teachers to help elevate their reading level and test scores .
The Criterion Reference Competency Test (CRCT) and Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) are administered to third and fifth grade students and because the performance on these tests directly influence students’ promotion to the next grade level, great emphasis is placed on test preparation. Last school year, more than 90% of program participants showed improvement in their reading test scores.
In addition to classroom instruction, students also get a chance to enjoy many summer fun activities and field trips which include weekly visits to a nearby swimming pool, trips to the Center for Puppetry Arts, Mayfield Dairy Farm, and the World of Coca Cola.
